For those of us who are affected by mobility issues as we get older, losing weight may help. The more excess weight we carry, the harder it is on our joints, limbs, and heart. Consult with your doctor before you attempt any weight loss program, but these six foods can help you to shed the pounds to improve your mobility:
Grapefruit
This fruit is wonderful for cardiovascular health; it contains folic acid, vitamin C, potassium, and pectin. The latter is a soluble fiber that may prevent the narrowing of the arteries.
LettuceMost lettuces have only 70 calories per pound, so this is one of the most diet-friendly foods out there. Romaine lettuce is an excellent source of B vitamins, as well as manganese, which regulates blood sugar.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower is full of many phytonutrients that can fight cancer. It also is a good source of folate and vitamin C. Lightly steamed cauliflower florets are delicious and good for you. Also, try mashing cauliflower with a bit of butter rather than potatoes.
Broccoli
Broccoli is an outstanding source of calcium and fiber. It will make you feel full after eating it, and it has very few calories. It is particularly tasty when steamed and sprinkled with olive oil.
Cabbage
Cabbage is high in vitamin C and is also great for boosting the immune system. It is very tasty when sauteed in stir fry or even paired with sweet/tart apples.
Spinach
Spinach is low calorie, flavorful and tender. It is high in folic acid, iron, and vitamin K. It also is full of antioxidants that fight many types of diseases that affect us as we age.
You can use spinach as a great substitute for lettuce in your salad. Try lightly sauteing spinach with chopped carrots and mushrooms as well as garlic, a wonderful filling for a delicious omelet.
