When many people hear the word 'mobility,' they think it refers to some kind of electronic gadget. However, the more vital meaning of 'mobility' refers to our ability to walk and move. Being mobile is essential to enjoying life and doing what needs to be done, whether it is walking to go the the bathroom, or strolling through a grocery store.
Losing mobility is common among seniors, and can have serious consequences - social, psychological, and physical. If you are not able to walk easily, then you may not go out with friends, and may not get the exercise you need to stay healthy. This can lead you to be homebound, which may lead to other problems.
So, all of us need to recognize if we or someone we love is losing their mobility. Sometimes, even doctors do not notice if their patient is getting less mobile; she might be more concerned about heart or lung problems, rather than something 'minor' such as mobility.
Are You Mobile?
Checking mobility in yourself or in one you love is easy. Just ask these two questions:
- For physical or health reasons, do you have trouble climbing at least 10 steps or walking 1/4 of a mile?
- Due to physical or health reasons, have you changed how you climb 10 steps or walk 1/4 of a mile?
The great thing about this test is that you do not need to see a doctor for the answer. If you answer yes to either of those questions, you probably have some sort of mobility problem that is limiting your activity.
If so, be sure to get an appointment with your doctor to discuss your options. Also, be sure to look into some of our really helpful products that can improve mobility.
